Ultimate Frisbee celebrates 32 years on Cortes, fights to play on

Recreational ultimate frisbee has been a regular activity on Cortes since 1990 and a local is working to keep the sport alive.

Claudia Raaen has been playing ultimate frisbee for 42 years, and brought the spirit of the sport to the island, initiating games at the Cortes Island School field.

Coffee collaboration supports local businesses, brings new products to Cortes

Food processing infrastructure is limited on Cortes Island. There is only one coffee roasting facility, and, up until recently, there was only one food business producing roasted coffee beans on Cortes. Thanks to a collaboration with Becca’s Beans, local business Med-Man Brand is now offering coffee made from Chiapas-sourced Mexican beans.

Local PhD offers art education at Old Schoolhouse Art Gallery

The Old Schoolhouse Art Gallery is expanding new programming beyond the regular gallery season this fall.

Kristen Scholfield-Sweet is a local with a PhD in Art Education and has been a board member for the gallery for 20 years. Scholfield-Sweet offered a four-part “Drawing in Nature” course this past fall which sold out. Since the educational opportunity was so well-received, the Schoolhouse is offering another round of courses.

Local poet organizing winter gatherings for creative community

As the first snow falls on Cortes Island, two creative groups are being formed for regular gatherings through the winter.

Soma Feldmar, a local poet, is the artist initiating the groups and hopes to create a group for writers, poets, and lyricists to gather to share and support each other in their work. The other group Feldmar is initiating is for poetry enthusiasts.

Craft Corral returns to the Gorge Gazebo after 2021 craft fair success

The annual event Craft Corral is returning to the Gorge Gazebo this November.

The event is organized by Kim Marks, a local artist and tattooist. Marks started the event last year because she wanted to sell her art in an outdoor environment.

“I was intimidated about being in a room full of people, so I wanted to do it outside mostly because I feel better outside.”
