Youth Summer Recreational Programs kickstart kids’ summer

As the school year comes to an end, the Youth Summer Recreational Program (YSRP) is kicking the season off with “Nature Play.”

Claudia Raaen operates the program through the Southern Cortes Community Association (SCCA). There are usually morning and afternoon sessions that run Monday-Thursday beginning July 4. Each program is designed for a specific age range, and the whole series has offerings for youth ranging between age three and up. One option that stands out for Raaen is “Fairy World.”

Reel Youth Film Festival a ‘time capsule’ at Mansons Hall

Reel Youth will host a film festival for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic this Tuesday, June 28.

The premiere will be showcasing local Cortes media-makers ranging in age from nine to 17-years-old. Artistic Director and co-founder Erica Køhn is excited to see the participants get on stage at Mansons Hall, and talk about their creations.

New Fire Chief leads volunteer recruitments and training

David Ives has recently taken on the position of Fire Chief for the Cortes Island Fire Volunteer Department (VFD). He has been working in the firefighting realm for 20 years, and began as a volunteer. Volunteer recruitment and training is at the forefront of his focus, as he settles into his new role. Ives explains, “My drive is to increase the membership exponentially and drive harder and train harder with new recruits so that the island is in even better shape going forward.”
