Iris Steigemann, an artist and painter local to Cortes Island, has been travelling to Greenland over the course of the past decade and has distilled her experiences into a collection of paintings that she will be presenting this weekend.

This Saturday and Sunday, Steigemann will present her show On The Edge: Dreams of West Greenland. The works were inspired by her six visits to West Greenland between 2013 and 2019, where she hiked solo across 1,700 kilometers of wild tundra. Notably, throughout her travels, she witnessed the melting of the icecaps and was forced to face what that could mean for our future climate. Icebergs are a main focus in some of her pieces.

“Icebergs represent a fleeting moment of time; their fragility emphasizes the realities of climate change,” Steigemann said.

The show is an open house and sale, and will be at 1094 Seascape Rd., Cortes Island, at 1-5 p.m. this coming Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17, 2022.
