The Bokashi Method: A more efficient way to compost

Nick Kiss was involved in Metro Vancouver’s waste industry for 14 years prior to starting Bokashi Living in 2013. 

“I was part of the change and the effort that Metro Vancouver was implementing in trying to create diversion strategies for the waste stream,” he explained.

He and his wife have been visiting Cortes Island every summer for years and now hope to find a home here. In this morning’s interview NIck explains why he believes in the Bokashi method of composting.

Wildfire Smoke Is Making Us Sick

It’s early June and there are 80 wildfires burning in the province, according to the BC Wildfire Service dashboard. 

There are evacuation orders in place for areas of the Peace River Regional District, and localities close to significant fires are blanketed in smoke.  

Fires are also bringing hazy skies to  Vancouver and other areas of the province farther away from active  fires. Across the continent, smoke is coating Toronto and New York right now. 

While smoky days and even weeks might be a  regular feature of future Canadian summers, they’re not something we  should be complacent with, according to health experts.

New Cortes Island Curbside Pick-up program officially started

The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) plan to increase the yield of recyclable materials, collected by the curbside pick-up program on Cortes Island, officially went into effect yesterday. 

Engineering Services Coordinator Sheena Fisher gave the Electoral Area Services Committee (EASC) an update at their May 10 meeting.

Rent and Food Push ‘Living Wage’ Up 17 Per Cent

The cost of life in British Columbia has risen at a record rate this year as runaway rent and food prices erode savings and squeeze wallets. 

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives’ 2022 Working for a Living Wage report  found two parents in Metro Vancouver would each need to make $24.08 an  hour to afford housing, food, child care and other expenses for a family  of four, up 17 per cent from $20.52 in 2021. The minimum wage in B.C.  is $15.65.

Port Moody to tweak fees, requirements for ‘deconstruction’ waste to coax builders to recycle
