How Aaron Gunn Riles Foes in a Coastal Riding

It’s a packed house at the federal all-candidates meeting in Powell River, with one very notable absence: Conservative candidate Aaron Gunn.

Outside the Evergreen Theatre, campaign volunteers staff a table stacked with placards bearing Gunn’s name and face, perhaps with the idea his supporters may hold them up in the crowd, conjuring the idea of his presence.

Inside, four candidates — the NDP’s Tanille Johnston, the Green Party’s Jessica Wegg, the Liberals’ Jennifer Lash and Independent Glen Staples — answer questions about crime, the toxic drug crisis, reforming the RCMP, Israel and Palestine, and what they’d do to ensure Canada implements the recommendations emerging from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

UBC Professors Sue University Over Land Acknowledgments and other ‘political’ matters

A group of professors and a graduate student at the University of British Columbia (UBC) have filed a lawsuit against the university. They allege that its institutional practices—such as Indigenous land acknowledgments, equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) hiring requirements, and political statements on global issues—are infringing on academic freedom and violating the University Act.

This lawsuit has sparked a wave of condemnation from Indigenous leaders and underlines some of the ongoing tensions within the university as well as the wider community.

Clock is running out for Canada to help secure a global treaty to protect the ocean

It’s do-or-die time for Canada and the rest of the international community to finally get a deal done to protect the world’s oceans, say global leaders, environmental groups, and celebrity activists.

International delegates are hunkering down in the back rooms at the United Nations in New York until March 3 in a last-ditch attempt to broker a legally binding deal to protect biodiversity on the high seas.
