Restorative justice program growing after three-year hiatus

After nearly two decades, the Burnaby RCMP’s restorative justice program experienced disruptions in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic began. Restorative justice started in Burnaby in 2001 as a community-based program called the Burnaby Restorative Action Group. Staff changes during the pandemic contributed to the program’s disruption. 

In the spring of 2023 the City of Burnaby hired new staff to take over the restorative justice program. Staff members who work on the program are municipal employees, but their offices are located within the Burnaby RCMP detachment, and they work closely with RCMP members.

Northwest B.C. cop reflects on her 25 years of RCMP service

In 2015, Const. Angela Rabut was receiving an award at a ceremony, when a stranger came forward and asked her if she could give her a hug.

Rabut was pleasantly surprised but obliged to the request. The woman told Rabut she was the reason her life changed for the better many years ago.

Volunteer Terrace executive shares her experience with the restorative justice system

Tracey Davidson never thought that her love for volunteering activities would one day see her leading a volunteering organization.

When she moved to Terrace from North Vancouver in 2011, she joined Volunteer Terrace (VT) as a volunteer community engagement coordinator.

She found herself enjoying volunteer work more and more, and it even helped her through the grieving process when her husband passed away.

Eventually she took up a paid position with the organization and was soon offered the role of interim executive director.

Prince George’s Restorative Justice Program

Linda Parker hopes to expand awareness of Prince George's restorative justice program

The Community Policing arm of the Prince George RCMP is seeking to expand interest and awareness about it’s restorative justice program among RCMP officers, community partners, and the public. In 2020, the Prince George RCMP responded to more than 46,000 files but only a handful of them, a maximum of 60, make their way to the restorative justice department each year. Linda Parker, Community Policing Coordinator, says she is  “ongoing struggle to encourage more file referrals” from RCMP members.
