Indigenous commercial fishers in Prince Rupert face late start from delayed licences

Editors note: More than 40 fishermen operated out of Cortes Island in the 1970’s. Mike Manson remembers the years when there were usually several fishing boats trolling within sight of his home. Now there are one or two boats and neither of them fish in our waters – See Four Decades of Gillnetting on Cortes Island.

Northern Native Fishing Corporation (NNFC) fishers lost five salmon harvest days after there was a delay from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) in issuing their licences, Mabel Mazurek, general manager at NNFC, said on July 26.

The missed days on the river cost the fisherman thousands of dollars of income and caused them a lot of added stress, Mazurek said.

Canada hopes to lure more nations into fighting illicit fishing on the high seas

Canada aims to tackle illegal international fishing and lead global commitments on marine protected areas with the close of the United Nations Ocean Conference last week. 

Joyce Murray, minister of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), headed a delegation at the five-day summit in Lisbon with a focus on sharing science and data to solve the ocean crisis driven by climate change, overfishing, biodiversity loss and pollution.

Mamalilikulla First Nation aims to conserve its spiritual home

The sound of singing and drums rang across the ancestral land and waters central to the origins of the Mamalilikulla First Nation for the first time in over a century on Thursday.

More than 100 members and guests made the long boat journey to Gwa̱xdlala/Nala̱xdlala — (Lull Bay/Hoeya Sound) in Knight Inlet on B.C.’s isolated central coast — to mark the Mamalilikulla’s ceremonial return to the ancient village site as the stewards of their territory.
