Repair Cafe Restores Beloved Possessions

Originally published on the Bird’s Eye

Most of us hate throwing things out, knowing how overstretched our local landfill is and feeling guilty about the waste. But what to do when something is broken, ripped, dull or stuck when we don’t have the skills to fix it ourselves?

Answer: Take it to one of ICAN’s Repair Cafes and watch an expert mend your trousers, get you vacuum going again, or sharpen your axe to a keen cutting edge. Presto! What was once headed for the landfill now has long and useful life of service to look forward to.

Last Sunday many Quadra residents took time out of their gardens on a beautiful day to bring their beloved but no longer usable clothing, tools and appliances to the Quadra Community Centre where skilled volunteers waited to help. Not only did they repair, they also shared their knowledge so that people would know what to do to fix it themselves next time.

Watch for the DIY team’s next Repair Cafe and in the meantime, don’t throw out that dull drill bit, broken blender, or torn t-shirt. Almost everything can be repaired with a little know-how and the right tools. And you will be reducing the strain on our landfill.
