Canada is joining the tide of nations calling for a moratorium on deep-sea mining in the high seas as an international summit gets underway Monday to decide on the issue.

“The protection, conservation, restoration and sustainable use of ocean ecosystems is essential to all life on Earth,” said Mélanie Joly, minister of foreign affairs; Jonathan Wilkinson, minister of natural resources; and Joyce Murray, minister of fisheries and oceans, in a statement released Monday.

Canada must speed up decarbonizing ports to slash rising shipping emissions

Canada urgently needs to chart a course of action that will dramatically reduce the shipping sector’s surging greenhouse gas emissions, says an international coalition working to decarbonize the maritime sector. 

Each year, international shipping creates a billion tonnes of carbon dioxide. If the sector was a country, it would be the sixth largest emitter of CO2 emissions, roughly equivalent to Japan

‘Excruciating’ negotiations produce an unprecedented global treaty to protect the high seas

​An unprecedented global treaty to protect nature in the high seas was secured after a last and final push in negotiations that lasted nearly 40 hours over the weekend. 

After close to two decades of discussion, five years of difficult negotiations, and a previous attempt to seal the deal, conference president Rena Lee announced an agreement on the UN High Seas Biodiversity Treaty late Saturday.

Clock is running out for Canada to help secure a global treaty to protect the ocean

It’s do-or-die time for Canada and the rest of the international community to finally get a deal done to protect the world’s oceans, say global leaders, environmental groups, and celebrity activists.

International delegates are hunkering down in the back rooms at the United Nations in New York until March 3 in a last-ditch attempt to broker a legally binding deal to protect biodiversity on the high seas.

Canada declares moratorium on deep-sea mining at global ocean conservation summit

Canada has announced a moratorium on deep-sea mining in both territorial and international waters on the last day of a global ocean conservation summit.

Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, Fisheries Minister Joyce Murray and Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault made statements Thursday confirming Canada’s position on seabed mining at the IMPAC5 leadership forum in Vancouver.
