Small B.C. island floats new model of rural education

A tiny B.C. island is charting a new course for rural education to keep families from abandoning the community to ensure their kids can attend high school. 

This fall, the Cortes Island community and School District 72 are piloting a half-year of public high-school programming shaped by students’ interests, community expertise and the surrounding environment, said Manda Aufochs Gillespie, one of the project’s organizers.

Cortes Island high school pilot program sees successful start

The Cortes Island Academy has launched its debut semester for high school students and administrators say the school year is off to a good start.

Cortes Island Academy urgently seeking fall housing for students

The Cortes Island Academy is launching its inaugural semester of programs for high school students this September.

The Cortes Island School only accommodates students up until Grade 9. The Cortes Island Academy, or “CIA” as it’s known, is the creation of a number of Cortes parents, who wanted to ensure students did not have to leave the island for Grades 10, 11 and 12. The program is part of local School District 72.

Cortes Island student wins $130,000 scholarship to Victoria school

While most students get to attend a local high school, Sofia Auger Nybida will be making the trek down the coast of British Columbia for her Grade 12 year.

Auger Nybida was awarded a $130,000 scholarship to attend Victoria’s Pearson College for Grade 12 this fall. For the year following, the Anishinaabekwe student will take an International Baccalaureate year at the international school. The scholarship covers two years tuition and full room and board.

Cortes Island Homestays needed for exchange students starting this September

BC School District 72 (SD72) is preparing for a brand new high school program called Cortes Island Academy (CIA) this fall and needs homestay families to host off-island students.
