Carol Titler: When FOCI moved into Mansons

Carol Titler served on the Friends of Cortes Island Board (FOCI) during some of the society’s formative years. She was not one of the founding members, but joined FOCI when it was still meeting in people’s homes and hauling its records around in boxes.

“Then Hubert Havelaar built an office space and it was moved to downtown Manson’s Landing where it put us right there in the public eye. People began to really want to see what we were up to,” she explained.

Active transportation study for Cortes Island launched

CKTZ News, through an LJI grant from Canada-info.ca

The Strathcona Regional District is launching its active transportation research project this week, beginning with a public survey.  The SRD was granted $20,000 last year toward the project for Cortes Island (previously reported) from the Union of BC Municipalities.

NAHC recognizes Ocotillo Wind Farm site as a Native American Sacred site

On Monday, April 22, the California Native American Heritage Commission (NAHC) recognized the 12,000 acre Ocotillo Wind Project site, in what the local Quechan tribe refers to as the “Valley of Death,” as a sacred Native American cultural landscape and burial ground. This resolution was passed by a 4-0 vote.
