Regional Director’s Notice – The Cortes Housing Forum

Hello Cortes Island, this is Mark Vonesch, your Regional Director.

I’m hoping to have as many of you as possible attend the housing forum on Saturday, December 2nd at Manson’s Hall. The Cortes housing forum is a chance for us to all get together and listen to each other and talk about the pressing issues that we’re facing.

We’re going to do a little bit of  presenting what’s the current state of housing on Cortes, but really it’s about asking questions and getting people to share their experiences and their opinions and ideas for addressing the challenges that we face.

For example:

  • Should Cortes Island opt into the new BC government legislation that says you can only have Airbnbs on your primary property?
  • Should we create a new official community plan that’s going to provide direction for land use planning on Cortes into the future?
  • Do we need an empty homes tax?
  • Are there things that we should do to incentivize the free market to create more rentals?
  • Are there things we can do to support landlords that are struggling, or have struggled, with bad renters and are scared to rent their property now?
  • Is there some kind of intermediary that we could create that would take some of that risk away?

I’m really interested to hear from you and I know there’s a diversity of opinions on Cortes  and I really value everybody’s thoughts. I hope that you can attend. There are details on the Tideline but doors open at 9am on Saturday at Manson’s Hall.

For those of you that can’t attend in person, there’s also a zoom option that’s going to be a facilitated discussion as well and the link for that is us02web.zoom.us/j/81302187462?pwd=VDh6dmlNQUVKYkZrQTJIa1BYVkFadz09

See you there.
