International rally racer trains in qathet’s cold & mud for hot & dry events

My true passion is riding the trails on my dirt bike. With three young children, I only manage to squeeze in an hour or two here and there, but even that can be enough time to work up a sweat making my way to a favorite peak. While catching my breath, my reward is looking out at Georgia Strait or Haslam Lake. I always remember to be considerate and respectful while using the trails, so everyone can enjoy them safely.

Endangered wildlife committee keeps B.C’s humpback whales on the list

The North Pacific humpback whale population is still at risk with a recommended status of “special concern”, announced the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) on Dec. 8.

Since commercial whaling for humpbacks was outlawed in 1966, the North Pacific population has been slowly growing, COSEWIC stated. They added that more than 4,000 whales spend time off the coast of B.C., but there are still risks.

Tire Island:Tired to Tireless

We found the infamous ‘Tire Island’ in early June while out scouting for potential shoreline cleanup projects.

Sailors, boaters and even BC Ferry passengers had gawked at this island for years. In the idyllic waters of the Salish Sea, a small islet off Nelson Island had grown a mountain of off-rim vehicle tires.

For many, the idea of immersing oneself in the ocean in the middle of December is about as appealing as eating an entire fruit cake in one sitting.

Yet Powtown Popsicles insist their daily dip is uplifting and invigorating. The first 30 seconds in the water are the hardest – that’s when your body is acclimatizing and saying, ‘Oh dear why am I here?’ But when you get past that and you start talking to another Popsicle, you forget just how cold it is, says swimmer Pat Turner.

The Harbour Authority of Cortes Island is conducting an information and education campaign about its purpose and responsible boating

The Harbour Authority of Cortes Island has begun an information campaign about its purpose and responsibilities, as well as responsible boating practices.

The Authority manages five government docks on Cortes Island located at Mansons Landing, Squirrel Cove, Whaletown, Cortes Bay, and The Gorge.
