Aaron Gunn responds: About Residential Schools

Originally published on Twitter

I’d like to clear up what has been said today.

I have always been firm in recognizing the truly horrific events that transpired in residential schools, and any attempt to suggest otherwise is simply false. I have never wavered in condemning these institutions of abuse, where countless First Nations suffered at the hands of a patronizing federal government.

Aaron Gunn Responds: About Putin

Originally published on Twitter

I am firmly opposed to Putin’s heinous and illegal actions in Ukraine, and his oppression of the Russian people within Russia. I have held and articulated these views publicly for years.

In early 2014, when I was still in my early 20s, I made foolish comments about Putin and Ukraine. I stopped holding those views a long time ago.

Unite For The Canada We Want

Press release from the Council of Canadians, Campbell River Chapter

With an election coming up, Canadians need to be clear about what they want.  Which is why The Council of Canadians is running a campaign, called Unite For The Canada We Want.  There’s nothing like a threat to our country and economic well-being to make us dig in our heels.  But what do we want  – here in Campbell River, in our province, and in our country?

Council of Canadians, Campbell River Chapter, is inviting all members of our community to gather to share their thoughts and concerns about the issues that are paramount in their lives.  These may include defunding public health and education; cutting taxes and regulations for corporations; rolling back worker protection, backpedalling on our climate commitments.  Corporate interests and conservative political agendas call this expanding freedom of choice for healthcare and regulation; freeing up money for investment and growth; providing workers more choice and flexibility; but this is smoke and mirrors for limiting public access to the services we rely on and eroding our democratic structures.

Chief Darren Blaney: Responses To The Conservative Party

Press release from the Homalco Nation

In a press release in February, Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives included a quote from Chief Darren Blaney of the Homalco First Nation in a news release regarding their plan for a First Nations Resource Charge (FNRC) without consultation or consent. This was only recently brought to the attention of leadership. The Chief and Council unequivocally denounce the use of this and any future quotes of their leadership without proper consultation and call on the Conservatives to remove any Homalco-related quotes from past, current and future new releases.

This revelation comes on the heels of calls for Aaron Gunn, the Conservative candidate in the federal riding in which the Homalco community reside, to be dropped from the election campaign. Social media posts from the recent past indicate that Gunn holds extreme views regarding residential schools, minimizing the history and trauma caused by residential schools, attacking 2SLGBTQ+ people, and sympathizing with warmonger Putin. We join other leaders today in calling for the removal of Aaron Gunn from the Conservative Party.

Area C Director’s Report: Board changes allocation formula, Area C taxes increase

From the desk of Regional Director Robyn Mawhinney

Hello,
Some reports are more enjoyable to share than others. This isn’t one of the fun ones because it does not contain great news for Area C taxpayers. In early March I wrote about support service cost allocations. This report is an update on these cost allocations, with the news that Area C property owners will be receiving a tax increase in 2025, an increase that does not bring with it an increase in services: it is the result of a reallocation of administrative costs between municipalities and electoral areas.
