Seafest 2026

By Savanna Young- Seafest coordinator

Seafest once again drew strong attendance this year as residents and visitors gathered to celebrate the island’s aquaculture heritage and ongoing shellfish industry. For close to 30 years, the event has to served as both a cultural gathering and an opportunity to highlight the importance of our local shellfish industry. This year Seafest returned to the Gorge Harbour Marina, a venue that has historically hosted the event.

The fest featured a full slate of live entertainment, including five local musicians (The Awakeneers, Andi White, Josie Simpson, Johnny Hanuse and He Said She Said). We were gifted by a cultural welcoming by Kenny Hanuse. Ten vendors and non-profit organizations participated, offering handcrafted goods, community information and outreach.

Over 350 plates of locally prepared seafood were cooked and served by our community members. A raffle featuring locally donated items helped raise over $500, adding another layer of community support and going towards next year’s music fund.

In partnership with Klahoose Community Bus, organizers arranged a shuttle service to welcome ferry passengers and transport visitors directly to the grounds, improving access for both residents and off-island guests.

More than 20 volunteers contributed their time and energy to ensure the event ran successfully, taking on roles such as cooking, ticket sales, waste management, and delivering meals to seniors. Additional support came through the hiring of a dedicated music coordinator/sound technician.

Overall, Seafest 2026 stood as a strong reflection of community collaboration, cultural celebration, and continued commitment and love of Cortes Island’s traditions.
