Pemberton’s six big moves on climate change, three years in

On March 15, 2022, the Village of Pemberton (VOP) declared a climate emergency in response to a local youth-led climate action petition. The declaration, though largely symbolic, detailed the human and financial costs of letting climate change run rampant. The Village has seen devastating flooding and forest fires in the years since.

“The impacts of climate change are obvious,” said Pemberton Mayor Mike Richman. “[The declaration] gave us something to rally around.”

Directly following the declaration, the Village of Pemberton published a Community Climate Action Plan (CCAP), which charts a path towards net-zero emissions by 2050 through six “big moves.”

Vancouver Airports aims for net zero carbon by 2030

Vancouver International Airport is moving up its goal of becoming net zero by 20 years, from 2050 to 2030.

“We want to become the world’s greenest airport because we know that flying is an essential part of a connected society and a growing economy,” said the airport’s president and CEO Tamara Vrooman. “But at the same time, we know that emissions are a part of our industry. It’s not flying that’s the enemy, it’s carbon, and we have to find ways to decarbonize an essential service that is so important.”

What Happened To Energiewende?

Germany led the world for the number of solar installations during 2012. This relatively small European nation added 7.60 GW of capacity to the grid. Then their numbers started going downward: 3.30 GW of new solar capacity in 2013; 1.56 GW in 2014; 1.4 GW in 2015. As of October 31, only 0.79 GW of new capacity has been added this year. Germany’s critics are once again hailing the imminent demise of this nation’s renewable revolution.  What happened to Energiewende?

Lux Research just released a report stating that as prices keep falling, “Big Oil” is increasingly using smarter sensors and “Big Data” to manage risks, cut costs by increasing efficiency, and increase revenues.
