The Strathcona Regional District will be inviting all First Nations in the district to Board meetings. Within the Cortes Currents broadcast area, this should include the Klahoose, Homalco, Tla’amin, We wai Kai, Wei wai Kum and Laichkwiltach First Nations.

The Hereditary Chiefs of the Laichkwiltach, We Wai Kai and K’omok First Nations will be taking a protest flotilla to the Raza Island fish farm on Saturday, May 14,2022.
“We three Hereditary Chiefs have jurisdiction and have the right to stewardship over the waters and lands of the Laichwiltach Nation, unceded waters and lands of the Discovery Islands,” wrote Hereditary Chief George Quocksister Jr of the Laichkwiltach First Nation on his facebook page.

Climbing down from Tla’amin’s family tree project, Randolph Timothy Jr. has begun a new path as the Nation’s new language coordinator.
“There had been a job posting late last year, so I had applied and a few months later I got an interview,” says Randolph.
Fast forwarding a couple months and Randolph said he was asked to wrap up the family tree project and start up the language program. “I was officially hired on March 23 and am starting to get things organized.”

West Coast environmental groups and First Nations opposed to salmon farming are urging the federal Fisheries Minister Joyce Murray to hold the line after a recent court ruling set aside a decision by her predecessor to phase out salmon farming in the Discovery Islands.
The Federal Court ruling found then-fisheries minister Bernadette Jordan contravened the right of procedural fairness owed to fish farm companies when deciding to shut down 19 operations in the waters near Campbell River on eastern Vancouver Island by the end of June.
