What Will Canada’s AI Strategy Mean for Jobs and Safety?

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada’s long-awaited and much-delayed artificial intelligence strategy on Thursday, outlining how his government plans to adopt and control the powerful technology.

The strategy signals the government’s support for large-scale AI adoption. The plan includes a $500-million fund to invest in Canadian AI companies and a commitment to support construction of data centres that will bring at least a combined 850 megawatts of compute capacity by 2030.

National Advisory Committee Formed To Assist In Locating Unmarked Graves

(ANNews) – The federal government and National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) announced the formation of a National Advisory Committee on Residential Schools Missing Children and Unmarked Burials on July 20. 

The committee will bring together experts in a variety of fields, including Indigenous laws and cultural protocols, forensics, archeology, archival research, criminal investigations, communication and working with Survivors, to provide Indigenous communities with reliable information on how to identify, locate, and commemorate unmarked gravesites.

It’s been a “challenging” 10 days, says RoseAnne Archibald in an extensive interview with Windspeaker.com conducted June 25.

The first woman leader of the largest, best-funded Indigenous organization in the country may or may not have been suspended from her position as national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, but Monday she meets with chiefs in British Columbia, at their invitation, and says she’ll present them with documented evidence of alleged corruption at the AFN.

AFN National Chief Explains Her Concerns About Canada’s Emergency Act

(ANNews) – On Wednesday February 23, 2022 Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief RoseAnne Archibald held a press conference as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ended the government’s use of the Emergencies Act.

The National chief expressed her concern over the Act during the press conference, believing the federal and provincial governments would use the act against First Nation activists should a protest arise.

Feds agree to hand over residential school docs to National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation

(ANNEws) – The federal government has entered into an agreement with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) to hand over 750,000 residential school documents, Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller announced on Jan. 20. 

“Canada has a moral obligation to survivors to pursue the truth and to ensure access to documents, school narratives and records, so important to healing, to closure, to education and preservation,” Miller said.
