Canada’s Special Interlocutor calls for reparations and accountability in final report on unmarked graves

(ANNews) – Canada’s special interlocutor for missing children and unmarked graves and burial sites associated with Indian Residential Schools has released the final report of her mandate, providing recommendations on how the government can honour the memory of the thousands of children who were killed at forced assimilation institutions.

National Advisory Committee Formed To Assist In Locating Unmarked Graves

(ANNews) – The federal government and National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) announced the formation of a National Advisory Committee on Residential Schools Missing Children and Unmarked Burials on July 20. 

The committee will bring together experts in a variety of fields, including Indigenous laws and cultural protocols, forensics, archeology, archival research, criminal investigations, communication and working with Survivors, to provide Indigenous communities with reliable information on how to identify, locate, and commemorate unmarked gravesites.

Feds agree to hand over residential school docs to National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation

(ANNEws) – The federal government has entered into an agreement with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) to hand over 750,000 residential school documents, Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller announced on Jan. 20. 

“Canada has a moral obligation to survivors to pursue the truth and to ensure access to documents, school narratives and records, so important to healing, to closure, to education and preservation,” Miller said.
