Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation criticizes Alberta government’s approach to border blockade

(ANNews) – On February 2, the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Chief and Council released a statement regarding the current U.S-Canadian border blockade in Coutts, Alberta.

“Over the past several days we have watched in dismay as the border blockade at Coutts, Alberta is allowed to continue without intervention from authorities,” said the statement. “The Critical Infrastructure Defense Act (CIDA), which was passed in 2020, was created in response to Indigenous railway blockades protesting pipeline developments on Indigenous territories.”

“This law was used to end Indigenous blockades — so the question that must be asked is why the blockade at Coutts is allowed to continue?”

NDP ready for 2022 byelection as Notley blasts Alberta’s handling of COVID-19

Alberta NDP Leader Rachel  Notley  said lifting COVID-19 restrictions for what the province called “the best summer ever” was “the government’s biggest failure” this past year.

In a year-end interview, Notley said it was this decision that worsened the fourth wave of the virus and pushed Alberta’s health care system to its breaking point.

Alberta’s Energy Minister:“Let’s Get It Built”

ANNews) – On May 22, 2020 Alberta’s Energy Minister Sonya Savage spoke about the COVID-19 pandemic’s positive effect on Alberta’s Energy Sector; the positive being the limited amount of people able to protest.

“Now is a great time to be building a pipeline because you can’t have protests of more than 15 people,” Savage said. “Let’s get it built.”

Alberta Removes Oilsands Environmental Monitoring Restrictions

(ANNews) – The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has lifted environmental monitoring restrictions for all oil and gas companies in the province. The lifted restrictions allow for Alberta oil and gas to suspend the monitoring of air, water, and wildlife around worksites.
