Feds urged to use emergency order to save endangered orcas

Emergency protections for endangered southern resident killer whales are urgently needed because of increased oil tanker traffic from the expanded Trans Mountain (TMX) pipeline, says a coalition of conservation groups.

Six environmental organizations are formally petitioning Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault and Fisheries and Oceans Minister Diane Lebouthillier, urging them to recommend that cabinet issue an emergency order under the Species at Risk Act (SARA) to save the remaining 74 whales, said Margot Venton, nature program director of Ecojustice, a legal charity working for the environmental groups.

Canadian Labour Congress wants more ambitious climate goals from Ottawa

Canada’s largest labour organization passed two resolutions Monday vowing to address climate change, a just transition to clean energy and green industrial policy in a way that’s fair for workers.

Both resolutions appeared on the affordability agenda at the Canadian Labour Congress’ 2023 constitutional convention in Montreal. The first pledges to tackle the climate crisis while ensuring workers aren’t left behind in the transition to a low-carbon economy. The second deals with industrial policy, including expanding clean energy and creating good union jobs in the process.

Union Fears Robots Will Kill Jobs in Controversial Port Expansion

The B.C. dockworkers’ union wants the federal government to block the $3.5-billion Roberts Bank container port project to protect members’ jobs.

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union says the port expansion will introduce technology and automation and set the stage for job losses at other West Coast ports.

NDP wants feds to extend consultation period on Roberts Bank shipping terminal project

The NDP wants Canadians to have more time to weigh in on a proposed Metro Vancouver shipping terminal that Environment Canada scientists warn would have disastrous environmental impacts.

On Monday, NDP MP Richard Cannings rose during question period to ask the federal government to extend its consultation process for the proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project because “critical information” was not available to the public. The public comment period is set to end on Feb. 13, and the environment minister will decide sometime after that.
