Liberal Candidate Jennifer Lash visits Cortes Island

More island residents turned out to hear Liberal candidate Jennifer Lash than could fit into the Pioneer Room at Mansons Hall. Half a dozen were looking on from the hallway. The Wednesday April 9 event was co-sponsored by the Cortes Island Seniors Society and Cortes Island Climate Action Committee.

Kairn Carrington, the MC, began, “I met Jen 25 years ago.” 

To which Lash responded, “I don’t remember life before Kairn.” 

Kairn Carrington: Yeah, it was a long, long time ago. I was working at Greenpeace on forests and Jen wanted to really take on marine conservation in Canada in a big way. So she started an organization called Living Ocean Society, which became Canada’s leading marine conservation organization.She led that and really spearheaded the notion of marine conservation in Canada. So we worked alongside each other. I was the forest and she was the fish, for some decades.”

Liberals betting on a Carney swell of support in North Island-Powell River


Editor’s Note: 338Canada’s latest projection shows the Liberals and Conservatives tied in terms of the popular vote, but in terms of seats it is 177 to 132, respectively. If he can hold or lengthen that lead, Mark Carney will be forming a majority government. In our riding, the race has been between the NDP and Conservatives for decades. Thus it is a bit of a shock to find the Liberals and NDP in a statistical tie for second place – separated by (3%) less than the projection’s margin of error (5-6%). It is going to be really interesting to see what 338Canada’s next projection will say both in our riding and for our nation.

The federal Liberal candidate in northern Vancouver Island is confident the surge of support behind Prime Minister Mark Carney will boost her chances in a riding that historically leans orange or blue. 

Jennifer Lash, the candidate for North Island-Powell River riding, noted Carney, a former governor for the Bank of Canada and more recently for the Bank of England, is laser-focused on the economy.

“He is, by far, the best federal political leader that we have to keep a steady hand on the tiller as we navigate the very stormy waters that Donald Trump is stirring up,” she said.

Jennifer Lash, the Liberal Candiate for North Island-Powell River

Jennifer Lash has been working at the intersection of the economy, ocean conservation, climate change and reconciliation for the past 27 years. She founded two non-profit organizations in Sointula and more recently was a senior advisor in the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. Now she is running for election in North Island-Powell River.

“In the situation we’re in right now, with the dire need for strong leadership both at the riding level and nationally. We’re not getting that leadership from the NDP and the Conservative Party. Whether you’re voting for the leader; whether you’re voting for the party; or whether you’re voting strategically: I think the best choice this year is Liberal,” she explained.

Federal ministers sued over lack of action on endangered orcas

For a second time, the world watched as Tahlequah, an endangered southern resident killer whale, struggled to keep her dead newborn calf afloat in the Salish Sea.

But with Ottawa failing to take urgent action to protect the 73 remaining orcas, a coalition of environmental groups is suing two federal ministers to push them to assume their legal responsibility and recommend an emergency order to save the West Coast icons.

Feds urged to use emergency order to save endangered orcas

Emergency protections for endangered southern resident killer whales are urgently needed because of increased oil tanker traffic from the expanded Trans Mountain (TMX) pipeline, says a coalition of conservation groups.

Six environmental organizations are formally petitioning Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault and Fisheries and Oceans Minister Diane Lebouthillier, urging them to recommend that cabinet issue an emergency order under the Species at Risk Act (SARA) to save the remaining 74 whales, said Margot Venton, nature program director of Ecojustice, a legal charity working for the environmental groups.
