Breaking down crime statistics on Vancouver Island

Violent crime in several Vancouver Island communities is on the rise according to new numbers from Statistics Canada.

Warren Silver, an analyst with Statistics Canada says that’s part of a broader trend across Canada where violent crime peaked in the mid to late 1990s before falling until recent years.

“Violent crime is something that we’re really tracking right now, because we’ve seen increases in quite a lot of places,” he said.

Greens Take Lead to Stop NDAs from Silencing Victims

Susan MacRae wants to talk about what happened to her, but she can’t.  

As a young girl, MacRae  signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) that prohibits her from discussing  sexual abuse she suffered, even with family members or therapists.

Supporting survivors of sexual violence

A social media post featuring grad photos of student Michelle Roy, which call out Mount Allison’s practices around handling sexual assault on campus, has ignited an online and on-campus movement. Approximately 400 people attended a protest in front of the Wallace McCain Centre on Thursday, November 12 to demonstrate concern for said practices and show support to survivors. Over 300 stories of on-campus sexual violence have been published on social media, which include experiences of university services and staff mishandling cases of assault or harassment.
