Monthly Stats for August 2024

4,828 people made 12,598 pageviews (PV); 906 repeat users; average Greater Campbell River PV was 6m 19s; Podcasts – 761 plays.

Viewers accessed 1,676 posts; This includes another 32 views of Max Thaysen’s 2020 post ‘BC Ferries Don’t Take Cash,’ whose aggregate count now exceeds 3,427 PV. (There is a 10 month gap between my records from 2020 and records preserved by the new Google G4A program, so I’m conservatively guesstimating the actual total may be closer to 3,600 PV.) There have been another 2 plays of the podcast The Awakeneers new single: December in the North, whose aggregate count is now 204 plays.

While Cortes Currents posts have often had Google first search page results, this is the first month where the average post in Canada has first search page results (10.0 and below).

45 different streams of traffic were recorded, the top 5 were:

  • 2,545 people made 4,574 PV views as a result of Google searches (averaging less than 2 PV & 4 min 44s per session) 
  • 1,481 people came directly to the website and made 4,122 PV (averaging 2.5 PV & 5m 42s per session)
  • 808 people came via Cortes Tideline, made 3,171 PV (averaging less than 4 PV each & 7m 16s per session) – This referrer’s numbers most closely match Greater Campbell River, below.
  • 110 people used Bing to make 201 PV (less than 2 PV each & 6m 29s per session)
  • 105 people made 213 PV through DuckDuckGo (2 PV & 2m 26s)

Visitors came from 661 cities, as well as an unknown number of ‘not set’ areas. The top 4 Canadian locations were:

  1. Vancouver – 1,114 people, averaging 2m 17s per session
  2. CKTZ’s Listening Area – 1,111 people
    • Campbell River (Cortes and Quadra Island are in Greater Campbell River) – 595 people, averaging 6m 19s per session. This is the profile most closely matching that of the Cortes Tideline referrals (above).
    • Undesignated rural area (‘not set’), presumably on West Coast, possibly at least partially within CKTZ’s listening area – 419 people, averaging 3m 36s
    • Powell River – 81 people, averaging 2m 30s
    • Comox – 16 people, averaging 2:51  
  3. Victoria – 117 people – av 3m 22s
  4. Toronto – 110 peoplen – av 1m 17s

Suspected bots

There were 1,740 plays, but the following tallies come from cities with known bot activity.

  • Fremont, California – 353
  • Boardman, Oregon – 259 Plays
  • Etobicoke, ONT – 195
  • Columbus, Ohio – 189

SoundCloud does not publish data for the length of plays, so I looked for visits from these cities to Cortes Currents. There are no records of visits from Etobicoke, possibly because it is a suburb of Toronto. In August, there were visits from Boardman, and Columbus lasting 0s, with a 100% bounce rate. This conforms to the MO of a bot. There were 4 visits from Fremont, lasting 1m 4s, in June. This looks like human traffic, but to be cautious I am removing that city’s total as well. The revised total is 744.
