Affordable rental crisis responsible for homelessness, says advocate

Campbell River’s recent homeless count lists 116 people, a 43 percent increase over the 2018 tally, but is only one aspect of  the Strathcona Regional District’s rental affordability crisis.

“People who are paying 40, 50 or 60 percent of their income for a place to live, are usually a few paycheques away from joining the 116 people that we counted,” explained Sue Moen, the Salvation Army’s representative in the Campbell River & District Coalition to End Homelessness.

Election 2021: NDP should be wary of weak spots in Vancouver Island stronghold

In the past two federal elections, Vancouver Island has been a stronghold for the NDP, and one campaign observer predicts it will largely stay that way after Sept. 20.

But there are some chinks in the orange armour on the island given the strength of voter concern about the climate crisis and Erin O’Toole bumping up the popularity of the Conservatives, the NDP’s historical nemesis in the region.

There’s no doubt the recent Green Party infighting offers the NDP some advantage this election with climate-concerned voters, said Mark Williams, chair of political studies at Vancouver Island University.

Election 2021: Blaney says climate change and affordable housing are the key issues

NDP candidate Rachel Blaney is running for reelection in North Island-Powell River. She has been the MP for the riding since 2015.

CKTZ spoke with her about the key issues in this federal election.

“What we’ve been hearing here, in our campaign office, is climate change; housing and affordability; care for seniors; and Indigenous issues- people wanting to see more reconciliation and action around reconciliation,” said Blaney.
