Monitoring fish and insects in the Dillon Creek Wetlands

Seven adults and two children came to monitor wildlife in the Dillon Creek Wetlands, on April 1st. 

Friends of Cortes Island (FOCI) streamkeepers Cec and Christine Robinson and FOCI’s Autumn Barrett-Morgan led the educational event. They began by listening to the birds, whose calls came from every side, and the gurgling flow of Dillon Creek. The aroma of damp earth rose to everyone’s nostrils.

Manual release of chum fry gives salmon population a fighting chance

Cortes Island Streamkeepers released nearly 20,000 chum salmon fry into Whaletown Creek on Cortes Island on Saturday, March 19, in an ongoing effort to bring back the natural fish population for a healthy ecosystem.

Harvesting salmon eggs on Cortes and the Greater Campbell River area

Harvesting 8,000 Chum Salmon eggs from Basil Creek

Around 8,000 Chum Salmon eggs were harvested in Basil Creek, Cortes Island,  on Friday, October 29th. 

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the Friends of Cortes Island Streamkeepers (FOCI) and the Klahoose Hatchery were hoping to collect up to 40,000 eggs. 

DFO Community Advisor Stacey Larsen said that if enough Chum return, there may be another chance to collect eggs this week.

Rebuilding salmon stocks on Cortes Island

Nestled into the head of the Hathhayim [Von Donlop] Park Trail on Cortes Island, B.C, a forest of hemlock, fir and alder wraps around a small clearing recently levelled and fenced. 

Soft water sounds come from a building with an open door. Inside, K’all-K’all Tina Wesley is leaning into a salmon incubator box. 

She’s checking on 70,000 Chum eggs, removing any that died. As fisheries manager for Klahoose First Nation (KFN), Wesley does this at the community’s salmon hatchery every morning.
