Trans Mountain wants to sidestep fire safety bylaws at Burnaby terminal

Burnaby is fighting back against Trans Mountain’s request to be excused from certain fire safety plans.

In early December, the Crown corporation that is building a pipeline from Edmonton to a Burnaby terminal filed a request to the Canada Energy Regulator asking for a “constitutional declaration” that would allow it to build without having secured proper fire safety permits from the city. Since then, the city has mounted a defence and last week filed sworn affidavits accusing Trans Mountain of dodging critically important fire safety requirements.

BC Reacts To The NEB’s Pipeline Recommendation

As everyone expected, the National Energy Board (NEB) has recommended that the Canadian Government approve Kinder Morgan’s proposed Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion through the most populated area of British Columbia. The NEB believes the likelihood of a major oil spill “very low,” but “the potential significance” of such a spill “very high.” Kinder Morgan would be required to post calculations of the emissions from all industrial activities and those created during construction of the 1150 km (715 miles) pipeline. If the Trudeau Government agrees and the project goes forward, the number of tankers carrying diluted bitumen out of the Greater Vancouver area could increase from 1 or 2 a week to 10. These are some of the ways BC reacts to the NEB’s pipeline recommendation.

Three Intervenors Speak Against Trans Mountain Pipeline Hearings

Former BC Hyrdo CEO Marc Elieson claims the National Energy Board’s review of Kinder Morgan’s proposal to expand its pipeline calls the review a farce whose outcome was decided before the hearings began. In the interview that follows, he explains why he withdrew from the hearings. I combined it with clips from interviews with Greg McDade, lawyer for the City of Burnaby, and Andrew Weaver, MLA for Gordon Head in Victoria, for  “Three Intervenors Speak Against Trans Mountain Pipeline Hearings.”

Greg McDade, lawyer for the City of Burnaby, says “it is time to question the legitimacy of the whole NEB process.” Andrew Weaver, MLA for Gordon Head in Victoria adds ” …. there is so little trust left in the actual energy board itself, that the B.C. Local residents stopped Kinder Morgan from working

Local residents stoppeded Kinder Morgan from working on Burnaby Mountain Conservation Forest this morning. Four company workers attempted to access the area where they had been clear cutting trees before the City of Burnaby shut their operation down on September 2. The Kinder Morgan workers abandoned the attempt after being “shouted out,” and tried to access by another route.  When this failed, they left.
