Parliamentary Budget Officer says fossil fuel tax breaks costing Canada $billions

A report published this week by the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) finds Ottawa’s tax breaks to the fossil fuel sector are leaving nearly $2 billion on the table each year in lost revenue.

The report comes at the request of Sen. Rosa Galvez, who asked the PBO to estimate the cost of deductions related to fossil fuel development. Specifically, it found that from 2015 to 2019, tax deductions related to fossil fuel exploration, development, property expenses and other measures averaged $1.8 billion annually. The low year was 2016 with approximately $1.3 billion worth of tax deducted, but since then, the amount has escalated to nearly $2.4 billion in 2019, the most recent figures available using T2 corporate tax data.

Hopes of climate success at COP26 fuels Canada’s new environment minister

With a plan to eventually deliver promised international climate financing now complete, Canada’s newly minted Climate Minister Steven Guilbeault is “cautiously optimistic” about the success of upcoming United Nations talks in Glasgow, he said at a press conference Friday.

Quebec rejects $14 Billion LNG project

After a groundswell of opposition to GNL Québec’s multibillion-dollar natural gas project, the provincial government has rejected the plan. Now advocates say it’s time for other governments to follow suit.

The $14-billion proposal would have moved fracked natural gas from northern British Columbia and Alberta to a liquefaction plant and export terminal at the Port of Saguenay. The company was aiming to export 11 million tonnes per year. GNL Québec said it would be a carbon-neutral facility by offsetting its “direct” greenhouse gas emissions, and that it would help offset dirtier pollutants, like oil or coal, around the world.
