Anna Kindy on Kerry-Lynne Findlay and the BC Conservatives strength in recent polls

Sixty percent of the respondents to a recent Angus Reid poll said the province is on the wrong track. If there were an election today, they gave the Conservatives an 11-point lead. This is similar to what 338Canada’s projections have been showing for the past month. Yet nearly 90% of the poll’s respondents also said they know little or nothing about the new BC Conservative leader, Kerry-Lynne Findlay. In this morning’s interview, we discuss these matters with Anna Kindy—MLA for North Island—and also play a clip from Kerry-Lynne Findlay’s Twitter feed.

BC Conservative leadership bids cropping up, but party politics remain perilous

Potential leadership candidates for the BC Conservative Party are rapidly emerging after the party’s near implosion and the forced removal of John Rustad last week. 

At this stage, many of the higher profile candidates, including newly elected federal Conservative MP Aaron Gunn and former BC Liberal premier Christie Clark, are playing coy, floating social media messages that suggest they are open to running, but reserving the right of refusal. 

Gunn declined an interview with Canada’s National Observer, however, the BC MP for North Island-Powell River said he’ll likely make a final decision by the end of next week.

Pierre Poilievre preaches small government, appoints big shadow cabinet

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s hefty 71-member shadow cabinet includes both former leadership rivals and loyal followers, along with several new roles, including shadow minister of red tape reduction.

Leslyn Lewis and Scott Aitchison, both candidates in this year’s leadership race, are on the list. The former will oversee infrastructure and communities, while Aitchison will take on housing, diversity and inclusion.

This is a typical strategy to ensure supporters of past leadership hopefuls don’t undermine the current leader, said Alex Marland, professor and head of the department of political science at Memorial University.
