Julia Burakova, a Canadian citizen of Russian heritage, says she has already faced harassment and hate speech on three specific occasions since the invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24. She is deeply saddened by the war

Burakova, a photographer, immigrated to Canada 12 years ago in search of safety and a better life. But, she says, today, she feels unsettled and not in the right mind, given the harassment she’s experienced.

Canada’s emergency powers evoke reflections on democracy, freedom

As the world woke up to breaking reports of Russia’s attacks on Ukraine, Canada’s short-lived Emergencies Act has evoked memories of Eastern European dictatorships among some communities and ignited reflections about ‘democracy’ and ‘freedom’ among ethnic media commentators. 

A number of ethnic media outlets have pointed to what they see as hypocrisy and double standards from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government for supporting disruptive protests around the world but cracking down on similar ones at home.

Ethnic media provides added perspectives on “Freedom Convoy”

Over the last week, from Feb 3. to 10, various ethnic media outlets offered a wider range of perspectives on three hot-button issues that have dominated mainstream headlines.

From the so-called Freedom Convoy, to Erin O’Toole’s ousting as leader of the Conservative Party, to the Black History Month, ethnic media provided coverage that went beyond the usual suspects interviewed by the mainstream.
