BC Outlines Plan to Begin Lifting COVID-19 Restrictions

British Columbia’s indoor mask mandate and vaccine card will remain in place as the province begins to ease pandemic public health orders on  Thursday and transition to a strategy focused on personal risk  management.

The Omicron variant, which  took hold amid loosened public health measures and drove the province’s  fifth wave of COVID-19, is waning enough to look at a less “restrictive”  means of pandemic management, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie  Henry said Tuesday.

Ethnic media brings ‘lived experience’ lens to coverage of ‘Freedom’ protests

Even as law enforcement prepared to move in to tackle the demonstrators in downtown Ottawa Friday morning, ethnic media platforms across Canada this past week focused on hardships to newcomers, a division within trucker ranks, splits within communities and the absence of people of colour in most of the footage from the “Freedom Convoy”.

Another issue that found resonance mainly among Filipino outlets is the continuing nursing shortage, caused partly by the refusal to recognize the credentials of those educated abroad.

Island Health not exempt from B.C.’s record toxic street drug death toll

B.C. communities large and small are suffering devastating losses as deaths from toxic street drugs reached an all-time high with 2,224 people dying from overdoses in the province last year. 

Every health authority saw a record loss of lives in 2021 as an average of six people died each day from toxic drugs, said B.C.’s Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe on Wednesday, and communities across Vancouver Island were no exception.
