No Conflict of Interest

Cortes Island’s silliest lawsuit is finally over. Lawyers for the plaintiffs and defendant submitted a joint statement to the court. Judge R.A. Skolrood agreed: there is no factual basis for the legal petition that 14 Cortes residents filed against Regional Director Noba Anderson last January and no conflict of interest.

The Craig Peterson Report

Originally published May 25; revised May 31 & June 2, 2019.

Shortly after fourteen Cortes residents filed a legal petition against their Regional Director, the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) hired Craig Peterson of Creative Solutions Risk Management Consulting to investigate the charges. The Legal Petition’s Factual Errors

The following article is a personal opinion not necessarily endorsed by the Cortes Radio Society, its board, DJs, or general membership.

I found Director Brenda Leigh’s attack on the Klahoose Nation’s application for a Grant In Aid, at the April 25 Strathcona Regional District Board Meeting, disturbing. She actually said the Klahoose should be barred because their Chief contributed to the GoFundMe campaign launched after Bernie Anderson’s cabin burned down in January 2018. Leigh claims that last year, ” A lot of Grants in Aid … went out to people who contributed to the GoFundMe campaign.” Despite its almost total absence of supporting evidence, Ms Leigh appears to endorse the Legal Petition which fourteen Cortes residents launched in hope of removing Director Noba Anderson (Bernie’s daughter and legal guardian) from office. As the same arguments are likely to reappear in the next round of Cortes Island’s Grant in Aid applications, it is time to review the Legal Petition’s factual errors.

Bertha Jeffery Responds

The article that follows consists of personal opinion and is not necessarily the opinion of Cortes Radio, its board, employees or volunteers.

On January 2, 2019, fourteen Cortes residents filed a legal petition, in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, stating that Regional Director “Anderson took money from her constituents for personal gain and a number of these same constituents received gifts and grants in return.” Many of the twelve individuals and seven non-profit organizations named in this document felt it was an attack on their integrity. Approximately half of the island’s adult population signed an open letter protesting the petition and the SRD’s failure to support their Director. In a recent Facebook exchange one of the better known petitioners said they have been misrepresented. Bertha Jeffery responds to criticisms of the legal petition.
