It’s not Christmas on B.C.’s rugged coast without a visit from the Goose

Even Scrooge knows a goose is essential to celebrate Christmas. 

And that rings equally true for folks living and working on B.C.’s rugged Central Coast, who also depend on a goose for yuletide spirit. 

Like Santa’s sleigh — and sporting the same signature red-and-white colour scheme — a “flock” of Grumman Goose aircraft brave rain, sleet and snow to get people and presents home for the holidays.  

From Port Hardy on northern Vancouver Island, Wilderness Seaplanes operates the last commercial fleet of the historic aircraft, which fly year-round and act as a lifeline for more than 50 villages, resorts and work camps along the West Coast.

Five car ‘near accident’ on Squirrel Cove Road

Around 10:15 AM on Saturday, I was involved in a five car ‘near accident’ on Squirrel Cove Road. It wasn’t a pile up because each of us managed to avoid hitting the other cars as we were sliding backwards. At least two of us went into the ditch to accomplish this.

Someone just sent in this photo which depicts four of the vehicles. The fifth was a little red car tucked in neatly behind the white truck at the back of the row.

BC Ferries calls on shipyards to bid on construction of four new vessels

BC Ferries is building four more “Island Class” ferries, due to increased demand and current vessels aging, and a call for proposals has gone out to shipyards in British Columbia, as well as nationally and internationally.

BC Ferries new Mate: Mike Moore

Last month, a number of Cortes Island residents recognized a familiar face directing traffic at the Whaletown Ferry terminal. Mind you, Mike Moore is better known from the days he sailed the Misty Isles than as the Mate on a BC Ferry. He was in Alert Bay when Cortes Currents caught up to him, but let’s go back to the beginning.

Newcomer to Vancouver: Transit like waiting for a flaky date

Like all great love affairs, the one that occurred between myself and Vancouver’s public transit system was brief and tumultuous. It was a summer fling that began at the tail-end of August, when I, like a gazillion British people before me, moved to the city in search of great landscapes, good people, and endless poutine.
