In Campbell River: Why the Tides Change

Come and experience the Coast Salish story of Why the Tides C hange at a FREE FUN FAMILY EVENT for all ages, Wednesday, April 22, from 6:00pm – 7:00pm, at the Campbell River Sportsplex at 1800 S. Alder Street. Meet in Room 1 and we’ll go outside to act out the story together.

Have you ever wondered why the tides change? Why sometimes they are really high and sometimes really low? What would happen to all the tidal creatures – crabs, clams, sea anenomies, bullheads, kelp – and all the creatures that depend on them, if the tides didn’t change? Welllll ….

“At the beginning of time, Creator gave each animal a responsibility to care for part of the world. T o the Eagles was given the responsibility for the skies; to the Bears, the responsibility for the great forests of the north, to the Racoons, the responsibility for the beaches; to the Wolves, the responsibility for the ocean tides. Everything worked together well until one day , something changed.”

As we act out this story together as bears, eagles, raccoons and wolves, our chiefs will guide us through our parts. There is no rehearsal and no “acting” required. The story telling will be led by Annie Smith, veteran storyteller and participatory theatre facilitator who has been facilitating participatory storytelling for decades in Vancouver Island’s provincial parks, throughout BC, and across Canada
