Mayor Derek Corrigan Speaks Against Kinder Morgan

The ECOreport reposts Mayor Derek Corrigan Speaks Against Kinder Morgan at a Rally to Protect Conservation Land on Burnaby Mountain

The City of Burnaby is trying to enforce a municipal bylaw to protect Conservation Land on Burnaby Mountain. The giant US oil company, Kinder Morgan, has begun clear cutting and drilling in preparation for boring through the Mountain to ship heavy tar sands crude oil from Alberta through Burnaby to China.

Kinder Morgan has asked the National Energy Board, the federal agency that is supposed to regulate the shipment of oil in Canada, to set aside the City bylaw to protect the land. The City of Burnaby is opposing Kinder Morgan’s demand to violate our conservation lands and has filed an injunction and civil claims in the Supreme Court of BC.

The residents of Burnaby and all people who want to protect conservation land are rallying on Burnaby Mountain near the Horizon Restaurant where Kinder Morgan intends to build a helicopter pad to carry equipment for drilling and clear cutting.

Show your support to protect Conservation Lands on unceded Coast Salish territory on September 13 at 2:00 PM.

Now is the time and this is the place to join residents and all concerned people to show your support! NOW is the time to take a stand to protect our Conservation Lands!

We cannot allow kinder Morgan to transport crude tar sands oil from the storage facility at Forest Hill to the Westridge Terminal through Burnaby Mountain. Over 400 Aframax class tankers a year will try to navigate Second Narrows to take the crude to China for processing and one accident in that narrow passage will forever destroy Burrard Inlet and the lives of people who have made it their home.
