BC’s Productivity Emergency vs Rising GHG Emissions

With the rise of global temperatures already at 1.4°C, we are currently on track to reach 2.8°C by the end of this century. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) claims, “every additional 0.1°C of global warming causes clearly discernible increases in the intensity and frequency of temperature and precipitation extremes, as well as agricultural and ecological droughts in some regions.” 

Denise Mullen, from the Business Council of BC, recently informed the SRD’s Natural Resources Committee that the province faces a more urgent problem. British Columbia is in the midst of a productivity emergency.

Keeping a low profile: jobless rate in Kootenay region stays below provincial average for second month

Although the jobless rate has slipped slightly in the Kootenay region it still remains well below the provincial and national rates.

The percentage for known unemployed people in the Kootenay region — which includes West and East Kootenay, as well as Nelson, Castlegar, Trail and Grand Forks — was 3.2 per cent in March, according to Statistics Canada latest figures, up from 2.9 per cent in February.

Labour market bounces back to pre-COVID levels

The Canadian workforce changed a lot in September, with a return to schools helping more parents, especially so-called “core age” women, take full-time work while trimming the participation of returning students.

For younger people who aren’t in school, meaning almost one-third of all 15- to 24-year-olds in Canada, there aren’t as many jobs of a certain kind available even as the overall job market looks almost like it did in February 2020.
