Effect of Octopus Creek wildfire to be felt for years: report

The closure of recreational areas affected by one of the biggest wildfires in the history of the regional district is being recommended by a provincial report.

A Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development (MFLNRORD) post wildfire risk analysis reconnaissance report for the Michaud Creek and Octopus Creek wildfires said the risk of waterborne hazards will be so high that it recommended recreational closures for the next three years.

Penticton Indian Band is using syilx traditional methods to reduce wildfire risk

The Penticton Indian Band (PIB) is working with BC Wildfire Serviceon a new wildfire risk reduction project using traditional syilx methods.

“All of the PIB [wildfire risk reduction] projects are informed by Elders and knowledge keepers,” says James Pepper, director of PIB’s natural resource department. “They write the prescriptions, then we implement them.”

Wildfires: BC no longer in state of emergency

British Columbia ended the provincial state of emergency in response to wildfires at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14.

The province has returned to a standard emergency response, but a government press release cautioned that “the wildfire season is not over [and] it is vital that the public remain prepared and follow the continued direction of local authorities.”
