Does Cancer Care in Washington Work for BC Residents?

The first few breast cancer and prostate cancer patients started travelling from their homes in British Columbia to  receive radiation therapy at two clinics in Bellingham, Washinton, this  spring. They are part of a provincial government response to a growing  backlog of cancer treatment. The province announced its plan to send  patients to Washington state for cancer care last month.

BC Promises Four New Cancer Care Centres

British Columbians will get four new cancer care centres that can offer radiation treatment as the province gets ready for an increase in  cases of age-related cancers. 

Health Minister Adrian Dix said Thursday that new cancer care centres will be opening in Kamloops, Nanaimo, Surrey and Burnaby.

Burnaby council votes unanimously to include caste as a protected category

Mayor and council in Burnaby, B.C. have voted to add caste as a protected category in the city’s code of conduct. The motion, tabled by Councillor Sav Dhaliwal on Monday, was passed unanimously to include caste as a protected category in city policies.

This follows two recent steps taken by Canadian jurisdictions to ban caste-based discrimination specifically.

Land defenders build tipi along TMX construction route in ‘Burnaby’

As the January rain falls around her, Khursten Bullock carefully approaches a tipi that was recently assembled alongside the Trans-Canada highway in “Burnaby.” 

The structure, emblazoned with a “Stop TMX” sign, interrupts the 1,150-km path of the still-unfinished Trans Mountain expansion project (TMX) — part of an ongoing effort with the environmental group Protect the Planet to set up camps along the pipeline route.

Vancouver’s Recovery Café Is an ‘Oasis in the Desert’

Calen Carswel has been in recovery nearly as long as he’s been alive.

The 61-year-old lost his  older sister, Eleanor, in a car accident when he was just four. The  absence of her love and emotional support, Carswel said, sent him  seeking comfort almost everywhere he could find.

Carswel says he turned to sugar and  television as a child, and then to alcohol, pornography and cocaine as a  young man living in Lillooet, Newfoundland and Vancouver.
