For Cortes Islanders relying on local cutters to bring them enough firewood to warm their homes each winter, there has recently been a greater feeling of firewood scarcity.  Everyone knows someone desperate for firewood, and there have been community notices on the local Tideline website asking if anyone is selling dry firewood.

When does a tree reach maturity?

The photo at the top of this page shows a pile of second growth logs at Mount Elphinstone, on the Sunshine Coast. The yellow ring on the outside is sapwood, which carries water and minerals to the crown of the tree. It both contains more water and is softer than the darker heartwood at a trees core. As trees mature, the sapwood layer grows smaller.

Cortes Island Forestry Partnership trains locals in tree falling, first aid, and fire suppression

This past fall, the Cortes Forestry General Partnership offered several free training opportunities to local forestry workers and other residents of Cortes.

The training included Tree Falling Certification, Occupational First Aid Level 3 and Fire Suppression and Safety. By the end of the training period, nine Cortes residents had completed the training.
