The Definition of Homelessness In Our Area

Summer is here, and with it  an increase in the number of homeless people in our communities. According to Sue Moen, the Salvation Army’s representative in the Campbell River and District Coalition to End Homelessness, this problem goes back about forty years – to when the federal government stopped subsidizing affordable housing. In the wake of the COVID pandemic, many Canadians have come to the realization that issues like this are community problems and we all need to seek solutions. In this morning’s interview, we talk about the definition of homelessness.

Seniors Housing Projects On Cortes & Quadra

Cortes Island senior Douglas Butt considers himself fortunate. The 87-year-old lives in a secure, well-maintained cottage in a small seniors complex with reasonable rent and a beautiful garden and grounds. Housing attributes that are exceptionally hard to find for seniors living and renting on Cortes, Butt said.

Controversy Over Lack Of Summer Rentals

Close to a third of the population (34.6%) live in rental accommodations. Given Cortes Island’s popularity as a tourist destination, it’s not surprising that a significant proportion are forced to move out of their homes every summer, when landlords either take up residence themselves or use these buildings as lucrative vacation rentals. According to a recent post by Regional Director Noba Anderson the BC Residential Tenancy Act changed recently. There is a controversy over the lack of rental rentals.

Rezoning Hearing For Rainbow Ridge

Cortes Island’s best known housing project took another step towards realization at the January 29th, Strathcona Regional District Board meeting. The public hearing for rezoning a 2.45-hectare portion of the 20.75-hectare Rainbow Ridge property will be held in Mansons Hall at 1 PM on April 30, 2020.

Home for the Holidays

For most of us, Christmas is a time when families come together. However there are still some Cortesians for whom the word home takes on a more temporary aspect. Cortes Community Housing is attempting to help rectify this situation on 51 acres they recently purchased in Mansons Landing. In this morning’s program, Sandra Wood and Hayley Newell talk about their association’s new initiative to giving option: Home for the Holidays.
