Photographer captures grain elevator images as they fade away on the prairies

NORTHEAST – Tim Lockhart has made it his passion to photograph as many prairie grain elevators as he can find. 

Lockhart was born and raised in Alberta and his dad was a manager at an Old Dutch potato chip plant. When he travelled with his father he gained a passion for grain elevators as each small town they pulled into had one.

About two and half years ago, he saw how many were rapidly being torn down. What every small town in Saskatchewan had was slowly vanishing. Lockhart decided to start documenting as many as he could find throughout the prairie provinces. To date, he has taken pictures of 465 elevators in the three prairie provinces — 275 of them in Saskatchewan alone — with 25 still to document.

Manitoba: Westman ride to honour residential school survivors

Next week residents of Waywayseecappo, Birdtail Sioux and Canupawakpa First Nations as well as Sioux Valley Dakota Nation are embarking on a ride — whether that’s on horseback, bicycle or by foot — to spread awareness of the former residential school system in Canada.

Participants will convene in Waywayseecappo on Sunday to begin the journey with a breakfast at 10 a.m., followed by a blessing at 11. From there, they will travel to the site of the former residential school in Birtle, located 142 kilometres northwest of Brandon, at noon.

Earlier this month IndigiNews explored a list of kids books written and illustrated by Indigenous creators, and we highlighted the need for children’s books that embrace diversity and Indigenous identity.

Stark poll results ‘speak for themselves’: Political scientist Survey says Canadians fear for country’s future

Editor’s note: 201 of the 1,518 respondents to this nationwide poll were from British Columbia.

Sixty-six per cent of Canadians fear for the future of the country after witnessing political unrest for the past three weeks, according to  recent polls released by Maru Public Opinion.

Additionally, 82 per cent of Canadians say there is no way the  protesting in Ottawa should have been able to last as long as it has.
