Has Canada Come Back?

The Canadian delegation in Paris is more than 250 strong. In addition to the Prime Minister, five Premiers, representatives from the provinces and Territories whose Premiers did not attend, representatives from all the opposition parties, twenty negotiators, support staff, personal from the Canadian embassy in Paris, mayors, business people, youth leaders,  environmentalists and reporters. There has never been a Canadian delegation this large at any previous COP and the sheer size of this endeavour shows that  Canada is taking COP 21 seriously. After a decade of withdrawal from the fight against Climate Change, has Canada come back?

Canada Is Back In The Fight Against Climate Change

Catherine McKenna, Canada’s new Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, has already been  in Paris. She met with her international counterparts for three days to discuss key issues prior to the upcoming United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP 21). Some of the most interesting comments came from the twitter feed. They started after McKenna tweeted, “Canada is back in the fight against Climate Change.”

Having spent 30 years with Environment Canada, Peter Schwarzhoff is often called upon to speak about Climate Change and the nation’s emissions. He also talks about the need to develop jobs,  forest related industries, the growing Clean Tech sector and the need to respect Canada’s veterans. The Liberal Candidate For North Island-Powell River covers all of those topics in the attached podcast, as well as the need for Canada to have a government it can trust.

Why Voters Readily Accept Misinformation

The Conservative party’s campaign video “The Interview” is essentially character assassination. The plot for this attack on Justin Trudeau’s competence was lifted from an old NDP attack ad (“Job Interview”) against the former leader of Manitoba’s Conservatives. The similarities between the two videos starts with their titles and finishes with their closing lines. The Conservative pr people added some new touches. Ignoring the fact Trudeau was a math teacher, the actors portray him as financially inept. They also make the ludicrous remark that the Prime Minister’s office is not an entry level job. (Trudeau was raised in a very political family, has been an MP since 2007 and Leader of the Liberal party since 2013.) Despite this, a fairly large number of Canadians appear to be deceived by this propaganda piece. Max Cameron from the department of political science at UBC explained why voters readily accept misinformation.

The Potential For A Four Way Race

While it is not surprising to find Canada’s three major parties virtually tied, this week’s Nanos poll showed an often overlooked trend. When respondents ranked their “two current local preferences,” the Green party scored 27.7%. They have been consistently receiving 25% to 30% ratings for a year. It is easy to see why Stephen Harper and Thomas Mulcair do not want Elizabeth May to take part in leadership debates. There is potential for a four way race.
