West Coast bus service connecting Tofino and Ucluelet set to expand in January

West Coast, BC – The public bus service connecting Tofino and Ucluelet is expanding in the new year.

Starting Jan. 4, 2026, West Coast Transit riders will benefit from more frequent midday trips and a late-night service will also be reintroduced, with buses departing Ucluelet at 9:20 p.m. and Tofino at 10:25 p.m. 

Operated by BC Transit and the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD), the West Coast Transit System has stops in Tofino, Ucluelet, Long Beach, the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ community of hitaću, and the Tla-o-qui-aht communities of Esowista and Ty-histanis.

Intercity buses are getting a boost, what about remote communities?

Some intercity bus companies on Vancouver Island are going to be fuelled by a $10.7-million COVID-19 cash injection from the B.C. government over the next year.

But it’s still unclear if the rubber will hit the road in a number of rural, remote North Island communities that had non-existent or inadequate intercity service even prior to the pandemic.

Port Hardy to Campbell River bus ready to go

Editors note added Dec 22, 2025 – A page on Wavin’ Flags website states it ‘will‘ (future tense) offer trips between Port Hardy and Campbell River three days a week (Tue, Thu & Sat) It is a 3 hour trip, with stops at Port McNeill and Woss, and will cost $100.00. Still No Public Transportation To North Island

The Passenger Transportation Board (PTB) has no time frame to make a decision regarding Route 5 bus service between Campbell River and the north Island, stranding locals who rely on bus service to travel down island.

Route 5 is the only pubic transportation option connecting the Tri-Port towns to the rest of Vancouver Island.
