Surge Narrows Store revitalization project
The old Surge Narrows Store, on Read Island, closed its doors in 2007. A Strathcona Regional District staff report sates, “since that time the building and its associated boardwalk, floating dock and fuel shed have been left in a state of disrepair.” Last November, the SRD board applied for a $2.2 million grant to revitalize the property and was turned down. Now it looks the Surge Narrows Store Revitalization project is going forward.

COVID is impacting Campbell River on three levels
Campbell River is the central hub for rural communities like Cortes and Quadra Island. It is the seat of our local government. Though many island residents have shopped locally since the advent of COVID, others take advantage of the lower prices in Campbell River’s stores. Visits to more distant destinations usually start with ferry trips and a drive through Campbell River. So the well being of this northern metropolis is important to all of us. The city’s General Manager of community development, Ron Bowles, described how COVID is impacting Campbell River on three levels.

‘More Justice More Peace’

On the morning of Thursday, Aug. 27, Charity Williams woke up to an email from the City of Victoria. It told her that she needed to alter the mural she had organized by noon that day, or they would do it for her. The mural, which is in Victoria’s Bastion Square, was installed by 17 Black, Indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC) artists on Aug. 14. It was funded by a grant from the City Of Victoria. It reads “More Justice More Peace.”
