The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) may be on its way to acquiring a $244,000 grant to reduce wildfire risk in rural areas. Close to $76,000 of this could go to a variety of projects on Cortes Island, more than $52,000 to Quadra and Read Islands and more than $50,000 each to Electoral Area’s A and D. The Electoral Areas Services Committee passed a recommendation that the SRD send application to 2021 Community Resiliency Investment grant program.

Federation of Canadian Municipalities gives 2020 Sustainable Community Award to Campbell River
Campbell River was given yet another award. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Sustainable Communities Award recognizes the most innovative environmental initiatives in Canadian cities and communities of all sizes. There were nine winners this year. Campbell River was chosen because of the manner its Sea Level Rise Action Plan addresses Climate Change impacts.

No new cases for at least a week
While the number of confirmed COVID cases in Vancouver Island and the rest of the province continues to rise, data from the BC Centre for Disease Control shows there have been no new cases reported in North Island – which includes Courtenay, Campbell River, and the Discovery Islands, as well as communities further north – for at least a week.

COVID is impacting Campbell River on three levels
Campbell River is the central hub for rural communities like Cortes and Quadra Island. It is the seat of our local government. Though many island residents have shopped locally since the advent of COVID, others take advantage of the lower prices in Campbell River’s stores. Visits to more distant destinations usually start with ferry trips and a drive through Campbell River. So the well being of this northern metropolis is important to all of us. The city’s General Manager of community development, Ron Bowles, described how COVID is impacting Campbell River on three levels.
