Politicians and lobby groups using crisis in Ukraine to push pro-oil message is ‘crass opportunism’: Elizabeth May

Canadian politicians and lobbyists are using the crisis in Ukraine to advocate for more fossil fuel expansion in a move of “crass opportunism,” said Green Party parliamentary leader Elizabeth May.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the House of Commons and social media have reverberated with claims from politicians and fossil fuel industry representatives that Canadian oil and gas is needed to replace the 40 per cent Europe imports from Russia.

Environment minister says Canada must prepare for “unavoidable” climate risks detailed in new IPCC report

Canada must do its part to bring down planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions, but the country also needs to prepare for harsher consequences from climate change, the federal environment minister said Monday in the wake of a new United Nations report.

“We need to reduce our emissions [but] we’ve entered the era of climate change. We know there will be more catastrophes, we know they will be more severe. So, we need to better prepare,” Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault told Canada’s National Observer in an interview.

Conservatives will vote against implementing Emergencies Act

Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo Conservative MP Frank Caputo will vote against implementing the Emergencies Act to address weeks-long Freedom Convoy protests against COVID-19 vaccine mandates that have resulted in a vehicle-clogged downtown Ottawa and border blockades across the country.

“I will be opposing it,” Caputo told KTW, arguing implementing the act should be legislation of the last resort.

It is the stance interim Conservative Leader Candace Bergen has said her party is taking as Parliament on Thursday (Feb. 17) began debating the federal Liberal government’s temporary special measures, which were invoked Monday for the first time since the act was created in 1988 to replace the War Measures Act.

Jagmeet Singh requests emergency debate on Ottawa trucker protest

Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, is calling for an emergency debate on how to handle the truckers convoy occupying the nation’s capital.

“We really need to take it seriously,” Singh said in a press conference Monday morning. “They’re terrorizing and intimidating citizens and people, instead of what a regular protest does: focus on the government and government decisions.”
