Alberta confident on carbon pricing deal as minister announces $28 million for clean tech

Alberta and the federal government remain on course to reach a carbon pricing agreement pledged within their Nov. 27 memorandum of understanding, the province’s new environment minister said last week.

Calling the system “a very complex way of dealing with industrial carbon pricing,” Grant Hunter said Alberta’s large emitters are competitive at the current rate of $95 per tonne of emissions of carbon dioxide equivalent.

Separatism: Most Albertans Don’t Buy IT! – new Angus Reid poll finds

It has been a week since Premier Danielle Smith declared “I support a sovereign Alberta within a united Canada.” 

On January 2, Elections Alberta approved the Alberta Prosperity Project’s petition for ‘a Referendum Relating to Alberta Independence.’ If they can obtain 177,732 signatures, it will trigger a referendum on whether Alberta should separate from Canada and become an independent state. 

A new Angus Reid poll suggests that most Albertans aren’t buying into the separatism. 57% of the respondents stated they would definitely vote to stay in Canada; only 8% would definitely vote to separate. If you add in the people who are leaning one way or the other, these numbers change to 65% vs 29%.

Appeal court ruling backs Discovery Islands salmon farm closures

Conservationists and many First Nations are celebrating a Federal Court of Appeal decision that upholds the closure of salmon farms in BC’s Discovery Islands. 

A battle over the ultimate fate of open-net pen salmon farms in the region’s waters, between the mainland and northeastern Vancouver Island, has spanned close to five years.

Coastal First Nations hit back after pundits and politicians challenge its legitimacy in pipeline debate

Disagreements over a proposal to build a pipeline to the BC coast has ignited a debate over who has the right to speak on behalf of First Nations. 

After Prime Minister Mark Carney signed a memorandum of understanding with Alberta to advance a new bitumen pipeline to the Pacific coast, he met with Coastal First Nations (CFN) leaders in January. 

BC Conservative leadership candidate Yuri Fulmer jumped in on X (formerly Twitter) to label CFN “just an advocacy group,” like a brand name. Fulmer claimed it is funded by foreign anti-energy groups and said if he becomes premier he will ban any foreign-funded organizations that attempt to influence BC politics.
