The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) board has joined the growing number of local governments protesting the DFO’s failure to consult before ruling that the Discovery Island fish farms must be phased out by June 2022.

North Vancouver Island Mayors support fish farms

Salmon farming is a significant local employer in Northern Vancouver Island. According to a recent report there are 572 Campbell River, Sayward and the Discovery Islands residents working in this sector. 702 people are said to have indirect jobs, which means the industry is bringing about $324 million a year into the local economy. Another 512 direct and indirect jobs, representing $135 million, are in Port Hardy and Port McNeill

SRD Livestreaming May Arrive In September

In accordance with Provincial Ministerial Order (M-192), the Strathcona Regional District considered letting members of the public attend the August 19th board meeting. As board members do not have to attend themselves, Chief Administrative Officer David Leith described this as letting the public come into the boardroom and watch television. The only advantage being that they could see the meeting live instead of waiting for the YouTube video comes out. He added that Livestreaming may arrive in September.
