Abbotsford’s secret History of Racism: Introduction

Abbotsford, BC is the largest municipality in the Fraser Valley Regional District, an exurban area about an hour east of Vancouver. It’s growing very quickly, with a 2013 City of Abbotsford Official Community Plan expecting 40,000 new residents within 20 years.

Booklet unveils Racist British Columbia: 150 years

A new educational resource looks at British Columbia’s long history of racist policies and the resiliency of the many Indigenous, Black and racialized people who have been affected.

The open-source booklet Challenging Racist British Columbia: 150 Years and Counting was released today by co-publishers the University of Victoria (UVic) and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA).

In Plain Sight: widespread racism in Health Care system

An Indigenous woman wakes up in a hospital far from her rural community in 2018 and again in 2019, dry heaving after both of her  surgeries.

She thinks she could be  allergic to the sedative, but the nurse assumes she is going through  withdrawal, despite the fact she hadn’t been drinking before either  surgery. “You people drink too much,” the nurse says, and moves the  woman to a bed where she doesn’t get further care for three days.

There has been a renaissance of Indigenous legal systems across Canada over the last several years, showing up in the form of small community initiatives, new classes and degrees at law schools. In B.C., there is an alternative judicial process called Indigenous Court.
