Canada’s 2035 climate ambition was weakened by the new Trump reality

When U.S. President Donald Trump was elected in November, Canadian officials issued a  weaker than expected 2035 emission reduction target to account for the  new political reality.

In an interview with Canada’s National Observer,  Energy and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said that  after the U.S. election, the government looked at the opportunities and  weighed the risks. Competitiveness was top of mind, more so than tariff  threat, he said.

Global Average Temperatures Of Select Nations: A Report Card

While the world has already reached the threshold of a 1.5°C increase in global temperatures, many scientists believe it is still possible to get back on track. According to the 2023 UN Emissions Gap Report, this would require a 42% cut in our emissions. It would take a 28% reduction to keep emissions below 2.0°C by the end of this century. A tool on the Berkeley Earth website shows each nation’s emissions in 2022, their current trajectory by 2100 and where it could be if all net zero pledges are met.

The Quadra Project: Canada’s Forest Fires of 2023

Forest fires in British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Yukon and elsewhere in Canada reached record levels in the summer of 2023. They also coincided, for the months of June, July, August and September, with the highest recorded temperatures since the Eemian Interglacial Period 120,000 years ago. So 2023 is likely to become the hottest year ever recorded since we humans have existed as an identifiable species.

It Is Time Canada Cleaned Up Its’ Emissions

Tom Mulcair just announced his plan “to restore Canada’s environmental credibility at home and around the world by putting a price on carbon, making polluters pay and taking meaningful steps to reduce carbon emissions.” Mulcair is right, it is time Canada cleaned up its’ emissions.
