B.C. prosecutors failing public says City of Terrace after repeat offenders back on streets

The City of Terrace is calling on municipal lobby groups and the province to re-examine Crown Counsel’s priorities after witnessing a severe uptick in criminal activities.

The council unanimously passed a resolution to send to the North Central Local Government Association (NCLGA) for its 2022 annual general meeting and convention.

‘Our community is in a severe crisis’: Crime impacting businesses in northwest B.C. city

Terrace business owners say they continue to bear the brunt of the city’s myriad social issues and increasing crime.

Liz Smaha, executive director of the Kermodei Tourism Society is calling on Terrace’s mayor and council to raise these concerns before the Union of BC Municipalities and North Central Local Government Association (NCLGA).

“Our community is in a severe crisis; our business community can not sustain this,” Smaha told the council in a Feb. 23 letter.

Erroneous internet speed reporting may cost the SRD $12.5 million, study suggests 

A recent study suggests that incorrect reporting may be responsible for Southern Quadra Island, Tahsis, Gold River and Sayward not qualifying for funding under the Connected Coast High Speed internet program. Their service provider reported their internet speed already met the national standard. Consequently, the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) had to arrange for loans of up to $12.5 million.

BC’s Ministry of Citizens’ Services, the Union of BC Municipalities and the Northern Development Initiative Trust hired TANEx Engineering to study reports that the amount of broad service available in rural communities is less than what servers like TELUS, Mascon Cable Services (a TELUS company) and Bell are reporting on the National Broadband Internet Service Availability Map. According to the ‘Summary of Findings,’ released by the Ministry, ‘there was medium to high evidence of possible discrepancies in 106’ of the 940 localities studied.

Applications open for free wood chips to Cortes and Quadra organizations

Grant to help take stock of walking and cycling routes on Cortes Island

The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) received a $20,000 grant from the Union of BC Municipalities to take an inventory of Cortes Island’s existing walking and cycling routes and plan for future development. The SRD made the announcement Aug. 17.
